Language school

Thanks for all of your prayers! Language School is going really well. I finished day 5 today (out of 10).

I'd say one of my biggest worries since I've been in Kenya was, "am I studying enough? am I practicing enough? how am I doing with my Swahili progress??" I have no real way to measure my progress, no one to compare myself to (in a good way) who is also learning the language so that's concerned me. Friends here told me I was being too hard on myself but I just wanted to be doing the right thing and learn as much as I can in the 3 months before I start full-time office work (ideal language study time is 6 months to a year). So, I've been really encouraged at what I've been learning in language school but also that my tutor is impressed with how much I already know for just being here over a month!

Steven, my teacher, has been so great. He's a believer, so we connect on that level plus we just laugh a lot. I know that God has heard our prayers and answered them concerning getting a good teacher and also that my mind would grasp the language. Please continue to pray that I'd continue to understand and remember this new language plus have people who are willing to practice with me.

Also, I'm having fun riding matatus (public transport here--little, I mean little, mini-vans that they put way too many people into!) and finding my way around Nairobi. It feels like such an accomplishment to find my way around this big city.

  2. Ash...so excited you have a blog!! I found it on your facebook page. I love seeing your smiling face and bright blue eyes in the pictures. I wish I could give you a hug and hear in person all that you're going through. I'm about to start all over again from scratch as I'm moving to Bulgaria in a month!!

Am praying for you as you continue language study and host the team this summer...and as they leave in a few weeks as life gets normal... :-)

Love you and excited to see you in October!!!!
